How To Search By Topic
All organisations on Room 102 are linked to Topics.
These describe the types of services that the organisation offers, for example Mental Health Helplines.
These topics are organised into Folders, which are collections of similar topics. These folders are then organised into Categories.
There are 2 ways to search by topic.
Keyword Search
This searches all the topics in Room 102 that match keywords that you type in. For example, if you typed in Advice, all the topics that contain the word Advice will be shown.
You can refine this search.
To go to the Search Hints and Tips section, please click here.
The search results page will show a list of topics that match your keyword. If you click on the result that matches your keyword, a list of organisations that are linked to that topic will appear.
The results are listed 10 to a page, and if there are more than 10 the page numbers are listed under the results table.
Showing results 1 to 10 of 21.
Use the Previous and Next options to move from screen to screen. Alternatively, click on the number to go to that screen. The number that is not surrounded by square brackets is the page you are currently looking at.
Searching Topics by Drilling Down
You can also search topics by working through the topic structure.
Start by clicking on a Category. This will bring up a page that contains all the folders in the category. There might also be some topics shown, at the bottom of the page. This is because these Topics do not fit easily into any of the folders, which could make it difficult for you to find them.
Click in the folder you are interested in. This will open up a list of topics that are stored in the folder. Click on the topic that you are interested in, and a Search results page will open up that shows all the organisations that are linked to that topic.
If you want to go back at any point, you can use the Breadcrumb Trail at the top of the page.
Too Many Results?
Why not try an advanced search? This will give you lots of options to search the database using different requirements, including distance from you, opening days, area covered, client groups welcomed and more. At the top of the search results page, you will see a button called "Advanced Search". Press this button to go to the advanced search page.
To go to the Advanced Search help page, please click here.
The advanced search allows you to search using lots of different search terms at once. Whichever options you choose, the search button will start the enquiry. There is one at the top and one at the bottom of the page. You can chose search criteria from several sections. For example, if you wanted to find helplines that offered services to young men, you would:
- Put helpline in the keyword box
- Select "Young People" in the age section
- Select "Male" in the client groups section
- Press the Search button.
Room 102 will then search for all the organisations that have told us that they offer a service to young people, men, have included helpline in their description of what they offer na dhave told us that they work nationally.
Keyword SearchThe first part of the advanced search is a keyword search. This will look for the keywords that you request in the name of the organisation, the address, and the about us box. To go to the "Search Hints and Tips" help page, please click here. The rest of the page is a series of options. You can fill in all of these, none or a combination. The search options are organised using information given to us by the organisations. You can select from:
Age Group
You can tick one or several boxes in this section.
Postcode Search This search works in several ways. To find an organisation where you know the postcode, simply place it in the box and leave the box to the right empty, like so:
[insert image here]To Search for Organisations Within A Radius of a Specific Postcode
This search allows you to put in either a full postcode, or the first part of it. You then select the distance from the drop down box on the right. For example, to find all organisations within a 5 mile radius of DA12 1BQ, type this in and select 5 miles:
Press the Search button to run the search.
Geographical Areas
You can select as many of these areas as apply.
Days of Business
You can select as many of these as apply.
Client Group
This section allows you to pick organisations that will offer a service to people from a particular client group. This doesnÕt mean that they offer a specific, tailored service Ð for example Ethnic Minority counselling. It does mean, however, that you can eliminate unsuitable organisations. An example of this might be if you are looking for a social activity for a man. If you specifically tick the "men" box, all the organisations that have said they are not open for men will not show up in your search results.
You can select as many of these areas as apply.
Method of Referral
This section allows you to select organisations that have said they need a referral from a specific professional. It also enables you to pick services that are open for self-referral, meaning that you do not need anyone to refer you.
You can select as many of these areas as apply.
Access Required
These sections enable you to obtain search results for organisations that have told Room 102 they have specific types of access. You could, for example, ask Room 102 to search only for organisations that have told us that they have a car park nearby.
As with any data on Room 102, we recommend calling ahead to check if your access requirements are likely to be fully met.
You can select as many of these areas as apply.
This search will look for the organisation name, any alternative names Room 102 hold for it and the first line of the address.
Simply type the name, or part of the name into the search box. Press search, and a Search Results Page that lists all the relevant organisations will be shown.
A-Z Search by Organisation NameThis will search for organisations starting with a specific letter. Click in the box, and select the letter that you would like to search. Press the search button, and a Search Results Page that lists all the relevant organisations will be shown.

To get the most out of keyword searches, there are several different ways that you can enter your search criteria.
For example, if you wanted to look for the phrase lunch club, there are different ways of putting in the data that will bring up different results.
Words
If you put lunch club into the search box, it will bring up all organisations that include the words lunch and all the organisations that include the word club.
This could, for example, bring up all the social clubs, all the sports clubs and all the places that mention lunch. It gives quite a broad result.
Phrases
If you type in "lunch club" in speech marks, the database will search all organisations that include the phrase Ôlunch clubÕ.
This will give you quite specific results.
Eliminating Records from your Enquiries
If you want to eliminate something from your enquiry, for example all lunch clubs that are in Bristol, you can type in Òlunch clubÓ -Bristol
The search results will show all organisations that use the phrase Òlunch clubÓ but will not show any that also mention Bristol.
You can also type in lunch club ÐBristol. This will show all the organisations who use the words lunch, and club, but eliminate those that also include the word Bristol.

As you are looking up information on Room 102, you might want to collect records for printing or emailing.
These records are held in your shopping basket, until you choose to checkout.
You have 2 choices for how much information you would like to print out about each organisation.
Basic - This includes just the contact details and all the information about the services that the organisation offers.
Full - includes contact details, services, access information and all additional information held on the organisation.
To add a basic report to your shopping basket, click "Add Basic to Basket" in the shopping basket area.
You will be able to see the organisation added to the list:
[insert image here]
To add a full record to the shopping basket, click on "Add full record"
To clear out the shopping basket, click on "Clear Report"
The shopping basket will save the records you have selected for printing until you either checkout or clear the basket.
To go to the Checkout Help page, please click here
Printing Only the Record you are looking At
If you only want to print the record that you are looking at, there is a simpler way of producing a quick printout.
To checkout, press the "Checkout" option in the shopping basket at any time.
The next page will tell you how many records you have selected. It gives you the option to remove all records in the basket by clicking "Remove all".
You can choose to print the records in three different sizes. They are:
small 9pt.
medium 12pt.
large 18pt.
Once you have selected the font size, the database will create and open a PDF file containing the records.
You can then print, save or email the PDF using the functions within Adobe Acrobat, or the Internet Browser that you use. For example, if you were using Internet Explorer, these options are all located in the File menu.
If you are not confident emailing from Acrobat, we would recommend saving the file to an easy to remember place on your computer, then dispatching it as an attachment from whichever email programme you use.
